How many photos do we need?
Although each mosaic we create is unique, they are usually based on a grid of approximately 50 x 50 small images, or cells. The dimensions of the grid vary for each mosaic as the width and height - or aspect ratio - of your main image and photos in your collection play a part in finalising the resolution of the grid, as does the overall size of the print or canvas you order. We assess these factors and develop a mosaic that retains the look of the main image from a distance, yet contains photos that are large enough to be viewed upon closer inspection.
So you can see that a typical mosaic contains placements for roughly 2,000 to 3,000 cells. This is often ideal for our commercial clients, but most of our private customers don't have this number of unique photos in their library. Therefore repeats will occur within their artwork, which we can ensure are kept away from each other if required. We can, however, increase the number of photos in your collection by as much as 500%. It is for this reason that mosaics containing a varied selection of images can be created from only 100 unique photos.
Do you supply stock photos?
No, we don’t water down a collection with stock images as this weakens the personal nature of your artwork. We'd rather spend time increasing the size of your library!
What makes a good main photo?
The best main photos - or base images - contain a close-up of the subject, with good lighting and focus. Don't worry if your favourite photo doesn't contain all of these elements though, as we can increase its quality in all of these areas.
We have found that mosaics based on full-body or group shots don't work as well as single subject close-ups. If you have several subjects that you'd like us to use, it is for this reason that we recommend a series of individual images, rather than one that attempts to encompass them all.
What subjects can be used to create our mosaic?
Your mosaics can be based on and constructed from any subject you can think of - your imagination is the only limitation. The only pre-requisite is that you own the photos of the content you'd like. To get you started, here are some popular examples:
- Family celebrations, including anniversaries, graduations, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and birthdays of any age.
- Weddings created from shots taken throughout the day or of the lives of the happy couple.
- Newborn babies developed from images of the parents.
- All types of pets, including dogs, cats etc. Horses are popular too.
- A favourite holiday or honeymoon picture containing all the shots taken while you were away.
